I spent months waking up, putting on my AirPods, and mindlessly consuming information. This habit continued throughout my day - on the way to work, while eating, cleaning, or walking to the shops. This constant influx of noise not only hindered my ability to perform deep, focused work but also muddled my sense of self. The hyper-connectedness we experience today often leaves us feeling lost, our identities shaped by external influences rather than our own desires.

In our digital age, it's easy to adopt goals and aspirations that aren't truly ours. The clutter of information and opinions can drown out our inner voice, leaving us tired and directionless. A simple holiday might offer temporary relief, but soon enough, we return to the same overwhelming environment.

The Paradox of Isolation

Here’s a tip: periods of isolation can paradoxically be liberating. By stepping away from external influences, we can begin to hear our own thoughts more clearly. This solitude is not about loneliness but about being alone with a purpose - to understand and idealise oneself without the clutter of outside opinion.

The Wisdom of Marcus Aurelius

“People look for retreats for themselves in the country, by the coast, or in the hills. There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. So constantly give yourself this retreat and renew yourself.”

True peace and renewal are found within our own minds, not in external locales. We hold the key to our own tranquility and self-discovery. However, achieving this in today’s hyper-connected world is one of the greatest challenges we face.

Disconnect to Reconnect

Creating periods of isolation can take many forms. It might be as simple as turning off your phone for a few hours, spending a day in nature without any digital devices, or dedicating time each week to meditate or journal. The goal is to create a space where you can be fully present with yourself, free from distractions and external inputs.

During these times, allow yourself to explore your thoughts and feelings. What are your true desires and goals? What aspects of your life are driven by external validation rather than genuine passion? This process of introspection can lead to profound insights and a clearer understanding of what you truly want. For instance, my mornings now involve no external input for the first few hours. Instead, I focus on journaling, exercising, and planning out the day. This routine places my focus and attention on what I truly care about.

The Essential Practice of Self-Renewal

Spending time with oneself, away from external influences, is not just a luxury - it's a necessity for gaining clarity and peace in the modern world. In the silence of your own company, you can reconnect with your inner wisdom and gain the strength to pursue a path that is authentically yours.

In conclusion, in a world that constantly demands our attention, deliberately carving out time for solitude can be a transformative practice. By retreating within, you create a sanctuary for self-discovery, allowing your true self to emerge and flourish amidst the noise. Embrace the paradox of isolation as a means to find liberation, clarity, and renewal in your own mind.

Until next time,

  1. Whenever you or someone else says, “I don’t know what I want,” follow this with, “How can you, when you never spend undistracted time with yourself?”
  2. Start your day with a clear mind and your own thoughts.
  3. Audit how much information you consume a day.
  4. Most importantly, make an attempt at purposeful solitude.
