Many of us are caught in a time loop, repeating the same things day after day, year after year. There is a default life set out for us, with specific milestones at certain stages. And without thinking, we go along, never questioning each step. But you must avoid this 'life by default' scenario. In contrast, life by design refers to intentionally shaping your life according to your own values, goals, and aspirations. It's consciously deciding the direction you want to go rather than letting external pressures or societal expectations dictate your path. You are the artist, you are the sculptor and you have a hand to play in painting the masterpiece of your own life. When you grow up you, tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world, try not to bash into the walls too much, try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money. That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.” Steve Jobs Breaking Free From the Default PathMost people follow a predetermined script: go to school, get a job, settle down, and retire. They never step foot outside the walls. This path is often chosen not out of desire, but out of a lack of alternatives. Society’s blueprint is so deeply ingrained that many of us don’t even realise there are other ways to live until much later in life. As you grow, you begin to see that many people don’t truly love their lives - they just accept it. They go through the motions. The danger of following the herd and adhering to conventional expectations is that it often leads to a life of untapped potential and unfulfilled dreams. Some people recognise their dissatisfaction but remain paralysed by fear, comfort, or indecision, despite having the means to change. They continue to endure a life they secretly resent. Here’s a particularly striking reflection from a Reddit user that captures this modern dilemma: I don’t think it’s mentally healthy for a person to be stuck working 5 days a week 8 hours a day with 2 more hours getting ready and commuting and dreading every minute of it. The employer controls when you get to eat, use the bathroom and even your health care. We have to do it for 40 plus years of our lives.
Even on the weekends you are too tired from work to do much and on Sunday night you get a horrible feeling of dread for work the next day. Some people even get happy that they get injured so they can get paid to stay home for a while which is absolutely insane.
We miss out on so much that life has to offer and so many hobbies and experiences but we all got used to the post-WW2 work week that it’s become strange to people when you say you don’t like it.
If you're younger, you have more time to design a life and career so that you do not feel the same level of resentment. But you must identify what you want and build it with intent. Designing with a Vision: The Power of Intentional Living“If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable.” - Seneca. Without a clear sense of direction, even the best efforts can be meaningless. When days blur together, ask yourself: where am I heading? What do I want to achieve? Set a course with purpose and follow it. Finding what you truly want is often the hardest part, but once you know this, everything else falls into place. 5 Steps to intentional design 1. Reflect on Your Core Values (Base) Life by design begins with understanding your core values which serve as your compass, guiding your decisions and actions.
Without this clarity, it’s easy to be swayed by external influences and lose sight of yourself. 2. Clear the Mental Clutter The next step is to clear the distractions. We are constantly bombarded with distractions - social media, societal expectations, other people's opinions. By setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, and consciously tuning out the external noise, you create the space necessary for hearing your own voice more clearly. 3. Explore and Experiment This phase is about gathering experiences that will inform your vision for the future. Curiosity is key to finding what resonates with you. Try new activities, challenge yourself, and embrace the unknown. Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to the most fulfilling insights about what you want in life. 4. Define Your Vision Now it’s time to define your vision. What does your ideal life look like? What long-term goals do you want to achieve? Your vision should align with your core values and give you a clear direction. With this, intentionality takes shape, giving purpose to your daily actions. 5. Commit and Take Intentional Action (Highest Point) The final step is committing to your vision and taking action. A clear vision isn’t enough - you must actively work towards it. Intentional action means ensuring your daily choices reflect the life you want to design. This requires discipline, persistence, and flexibility to adapt as you go. Consistent, purposeful action is what turns your vision into reality. Legacy and Impact: Designing a Life That Lasts Beyond YouSteve Jobs’ legacy is one of innovation, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Designing your life isn’t just about personal fulfilment - it’s about creating something that will last beyond your lifetime. Whether you like it or not, you're a creator by nature. You were born to create, not just consume. You can choose to contribute to the world something that outlasts you, rather than just participate in a world shaped by others.
